Home Decorating: Enjoy The Process
Of Creating The Home You've Always Dreamed Of Having One Room At A Time
Do you consistently put off the tasks of decorating
your home because it seems like a tireless and endless process? Taking smaller
decorating steps frequently will create a final culmination of who and what you
really are, displayed in the most intimate portrait of self expression: Your
Home.
November 4, 2009 -- Have you been afraid to take on your household
decorating tasks because of your busy schedule or limited funding? We've all
been there, and sometimes frequently still visit there, but it doesn't have to
stop you from having a beautiful home.
Home decorating can be so enjoyable when we have the time and funds to really do
a proper job, but it doesn't have to be so taxing and expensive that we have to
put if off until the kids are out of school or until we've accumulated thirty
consecutive vacation days. There are many small touches we can make on a regular
basis that eventually add up to a well designed and inviting new home.
Decorating ideas for our homes seldom come as visions in the night, complete
with trim colors and curtain patterns. It's a process that evolves after living
in your home for a while and your learn to get a real feel for who you are as a
person inside those familiar walls. Sure you could hire a professional to come
in and take care of everything from the ceiling to the carpet tack, but then
your home wouldn't be about you anymore, would it?
It's not difficult to have the home you've always dreamed about and it doesn't
have to cost a fortune...at least not all at one time. Creating your home can be
half the enjoyment of having a beautiful home, and it also allows you to bite
off small pieces and price tags at a time. Start with one room at a time and
tackle the biggest jobs first whenever you can.
The biggest jobs are typically the painting, the floors, and the furniture
finding. Remember, though, that you're doing this one room at a time. If all the
walls need painting, so be it, but you will only concern yourself with the first
room you've chosen for now. If your walls and trim are in good shape, then you
can immediately begin with painting. Of course, if you have a fixer-upper, then
there could be preliminary work that you will need to address first. Even so,
once you get to the point of painting, it is all downhill from there.
Before you begin painting, however, it is a good idea to have chosen your
flooring so you will have your color scheme going. Because the flooring is
either preset for you or one of the biggest expenses of the room, it makes sense
to know what the floor color dictates before choosing your wall color. When you
have your floor color intact, then choosing your paint color will incorporate
your floors and whatever you decide for window treatments, bed spreads, couches,
lamps, etc. Your main color of the room by far does not need to be the most
popular color of your furnishings. In fact, it is a beautiful touch to match
your walls to the trace of moss green in the rug or lamp shades. Too much of the
same color can simply be too much. (Hint: If you are going to install new
flooring of any type, remember to paint first whenever possible. Even if you are
having it done for you, it's always a good idea to paint first.)
When you have your floor and walls, then it's time for your furniture. This is
the last of the big stuff. If you don't already own the furntiture that you will
be using, then you do have your shopping cut out for you. Remember to only buy
furniture that will last and that you truly believe you will love in five years
or more. This type of furniture will be more costly, but in the long run it
won't be any more costly than having to replace cheap furniture over and over.
In addition, it will always be beautiful and you will never feel like you
compromised.
After you have the big stuff, then it's time for your furnishings. This is what
I call the fun stuff. This is the part when you get to display everything that
you have been collecting all of your life but never had the perfect place to put
it. This is also when you get to buy new stuff to fill in unexpected gaps or
bare spots. This is the the time for flea markets, ebay shopping, and scouring
the internet for unique and beautiful things.
You won't have to even leave your house when shopping on the internet and you
can find exceptional merchandise for reasonable and moderate prices. Try
starting at a few key places for decorating accents, like http://www.pier1.com
for your tabletop and corner room accents and http://www.vintagemetalart.com for
your walls. The variety is endless, the availability is boundless and the
results will be astonishing.
Lastly, don't forget to enjoy the decorating. Now that you know you don't have
to take on everything at once, allow yourself to get absorbed in each phase of
each room and let each step truly reflect your most creative side. You really
can create a beautiful haven without maxing out all of your resources and you
really can love it as you go!
